Mannaz ᛗ

mannazMannaz; man

Icelandic rune poem: Maðr er manns gaman, ok moldar auki, ok skipa skreytir.

The delight of man, and augmentation of the earth, and adorner of ships.

Mannaz is the essence of human kind. It is associated with wisdom, and linked to the raven-messengers of Odhinn, Huginn and Muninn, thought and memory. It has connotations of intelligence or rationality. In a single word, ‘consciousness’.

Yet when drawn inverted in rune casts, it implies mental ill-health and loneliness, and perhaps the ill-will of someone you thought was close.
