Loegr ᛚ
Loegr (Old Norse) or laguz (Proto-German); water
Icelandic rune poem:
Lœgr er vellanda vatn, ok viðr ketill, ok glömmungr grund.
Water is the eddying stream, and broad geysir, and land of the fish.
Loegr is a rune of initiation as well as water. The sprinkling of water at the naming of a newborn child is a ritual that probably predates Christianity, and loegr is integral to the Norse concept of the cycle of rebirth. Many sacred sites were oriented around water, which was both a boundary and a means of transport to another world.
In Runes of Battle, the second of the Rune Song trilogy, the heroine Adelais recites the rune song of loegr when she has tramped without water for several days. When she is led to water by a wolf she begins to believe in a protective fylgja. (See also the rune ehwaz.)
