Ehwaz ᛖ

ehwazEhwaz; horse

There is no surviving Icelandic rune poem for ehwaz.

Ehwaz is a rune of trust and loyalty, like the bond a rider develops for his/her horse; two individuals united. It is also associated with optimal marriage, but more often with a non-sexual, symbiotic partnership. It is the rune of Sleipnir, the eight-legged steed of Odhinn.

Ehwaz is also the rune of fylgur, the spirit-guides of Norse belief. These were often thought to be the spirits of recently-deceased ancestors who took animal form, notably wolves or eagles, in order to protect a loved relative or shape their destinty.

The appearance of ehwaz in a rune cast in Blood of Wolves, the third novel of the Rune Song trilogy, foreshadows the appearance of a fylgja.
