Icelandic rune poem:

Týr er einhendr áss, ok ulfs leifar, ok hofa hilmir

Týr is the god with one hand, and leavings of the wolf, and prince of temples

In Norse cosmology Tyr was the god who saved his fellow gods of the Æsir by by placing his hand in the jaws of the mighty wolf Fenris so that the wolf could be bound. Tiwaz is thus the rune of justice, victory and sacrificial leadership.

In a pivotal moment in Hammer of Fate, the first of the Rune Song trilogy, when there is a broken bridge behind them and an overwhelming enemy force in front, Adelais looks down at the crossbow in her arms. It forms the shape of tiwaz, the victory rune, ᛏ, and she starts to sing…
